A comforting and crowd-pleasing casserole that combines sweet and tart apples with cinnamon and a rich custard, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf day-old brioche or challah bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 2 medium apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- Optional: maple syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, chopped nuts
Instructions
- Prepare the Bread: Cut the bread into 1-inch cubes and leave it out for a few hours or overnight to dry slightly.
- Prep the Apples: Peel and dice the apples into bite-sized chunks.
- Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
- Assemble the Casserole: Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter. Layer half of the bread cubes at the bottom, followed by half of the diced apples, and pour half of the custard mixture over the top. Repeat with the remaining bread, apples, and custard.
- Chill: Cover the baking dish and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F and let the casserole sit at room temperature for 20 minutes before baking. Dot the top with butter, then bake uncovered for 45-55 minutes, or until golden and set.
- Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool for about 10 minutes before serving with your favorite toppings.
Notes
Use day-old bread for the best texture. Adjust sweetness based on apple tartness. Can be made ahead for added convenience.
