Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Red food coloring
  • Crushed candy canes for decoration

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and peppermint extract, mixing until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt, then gradually mix into the wet ingredients.
  5. Divide the dough in half; color one half with red food coloring and leave the other plain.
  6. Roll small pieces of each dough into ropes and twist them together to form candy cane shapes.
  7. Place the shaped cookies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  8. Once cooled, sprinkle crushed candy canes on top for decoration.

Notes

For best results, use room temperature butter and chill the dough if it’s too soft to shape.
