Description
A hearty dish of juicy ground beef enveloped by fluffy dumplings soaked in rich gravy, perfect for cozy family dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cold butter, cubed
- ½ cup milk
- Optional: chopped parsley or chives for garnish
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely diced onion and cook until soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until it’s browned. Drain any excess fat. Stir in the tomato paste and let it cook for about one minute.
- Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture and stir well. Slowly add the beef broth while stirring continuously. Add the Worcestershire sauce and thyme, simmering until thickened (about 5–7 minutes).
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cold butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the milk to form a sticky dough.
- Drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough onto the simmering beef mixture, cover tightly with a lid, and steam for 15–20 minutes without lifting the lid.
- After removing the lid, check that the dumplings are cooked through. Garnish with fresh herbs and serve hot.
Notes
For a lighter version, consider using lean ground beef or substitute with veggie crumbles. Avoid lifting the lid while steaming for the best texture.
