- 16 oz French bread
- 3 ¾ cups whole milk
- 1 ½ cup heavy cream
- 7 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 ¼ cup sugar
- Optional: zest of ½ orange
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Tear the French bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in a mixing bowl.
- In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, vanilla extract, and sugar until well combined.
- Pour the custard mixture over the bread pieces and gently stir to soak all the pieces; let sit for 15 minutes.
- Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for about 90 minutes until golden brown on top.
- For the optional vanilla sauce, combine the leftover ingredients in a saucepan over low heat until thickened slightly.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving warm or chilled.
Notes
Use slightly stale French bread for the best results; mix eggs thoroughly and avoid overmixing the custard.
