Ingredients

  • 16 oz French bread
  • 3 ¾ cups whole milk
  • 1 ½ cup heavy cream
  • 7 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 ¼ cup sugar
  • Optional: zest of ½ orange

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Tear the French bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in a mixing bowl.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, eggs, vanilla extract, and sugar until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread pieces and gently stir to soak all the pieces; let sit for 15 minutes.
  5. Transfer to a greased baking dish and bake for about 90 minutes until golden brown on top.
  6. For the optional vanilla sauce, combine the leftover ingredients in a saucepan over low heat until thickened slightly.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving warm or chilled.

Notes

Use slightly stale French bread for the best results; mix eggs thoroughly and avoid overmixing the custard.
