Description
A comforting and savory twist on classic Sloppy Joes featuring caramelized onions, ground beef, and gooey Swiss cheese.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup beef broth
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- 2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
- 2 tablespoons butter
- Fresh thyme (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until they’re golden brown and caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- Once the onions are ready, add the ground beef and garlic to the skillet. Cook, breaking up the meat with a spatula, until it’s browned and cooked through. Drain any excess fat if necessary.
- Stir in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, Dijon mustard, and soy sauce. Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Lightly toast the hamburger buns under a broiler or in a toaster oven.
- Spoon the filling onto the bottom buns, top with shredded Swiss cheese, and place under the broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Add the top buns and garnish with fresh thyme if desired. Serve hot.
Notes
For best results, caramelize onions slowly and use quality ground beef. Feel free to experiment with different cheeses and adjust seasonings to taste.
