- 2 cups milk
- 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Salt to taste
- Black pepper to taste
- Breadcrumbs (optional, for topping)
Instructions
- Cook the elbow macaroni according to the package directions, then drain and set aside.
- Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Sprinkle in the flour and stir continuously to create a roux, cooking for about one minute.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring continuously until thickened.
- Lower the heat and add the cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
- Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Combine the cooked macaroni with the cheese sauce until evenly coated.
- If desired, transfer to a baking dish, top with breadcrumbs, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.
