Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon malt extract (optional)
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.
- Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture and knead until a smooth dough forms.
- Incorporate shredded cheddar cheese into the dough and knead until well combined.
- Cover the dough and let it rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C) and bring a large pot of water to a boil, adding malt extract if using.
- Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces and shape into bagels.
- Boil each bagel in the water for 1-2 minutes on each side, then place them on a baking sheet.
- Brush the tops with egg wash.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool before serving.
Notes
For a crunchier bagel, boil them a little longer. Feel free to customize with herbs or spices for added flavor.
